A function was organised to celebrate the birthday of legendary Indian actor Dilip Kumar, as he turned 90 on Tuesday. Muhammad Yousaf Khan, popularly known as Dilip Kumar, was born in Peshawar on December 11, 1922 into a Pashtun family. His father Ghulam Sarwar was a fruit merchant and owned large orchard in Peshawar. Sarwar moved to Mumbai, then Bombay, in 1930s.

Legendary Khan is considered to be one of the greatest actors of the Indian cinema. Starting his career in 1944, he starred in some of the hit films of his time. He is the first actor in Indian film industry to receive a film-fare Best Actor Award and holds the record for most number of film-fare awards. The Cultural Heritage Council organised a programme here at Peshawar Press Club, which was attended by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Information and Culture Mian Iftikhar, besides actors, journalists, writers, and neighbours of Dilip Kumar.

Addressing the ceremony, Iftikhar said that the government had declared the house of Dilip Kumar as national heritage whereas it was also purchasing the house of Pretwi Raj Lapur. The Minister paid rich tributes to Dilip Kumar saying that he was a genius, whose acting was liked not only in the sub-continent but also across the world. Dilip Kumar and his wife Saira Bano also addressed the ceremony by telephone and extended thanks to the organisers for arranging the function. Saira Bano also prayed for the health and long life of her husband.
